Beauty Papers is a new biannual publication founded by Maxine Leonard and Valerie Wickes. Created with the aim to liberate beauty, the magazine sets out to examine and explore the ideas that shape how we understand beauty today. Maxine is a renowned beauty editor and make-up artist who trained under Shu Uemura. She was beauty director of Wonderland magazine for four years and is a regular contributor to international titles such as: Japanese, Chinese and Dutch Vogue, i-D, Teen Vogue, W and V magazine. Valerie is a creative director whose ideas and aesthetic underlie the success of many fashion and luxury brands. She works internationally with clients such as Bulgari, The Macallan, Princesse Tam Tam and Hardy Amies through her London agency VIEW. The first issue, Issue 0. The Foundation Issue, is a visual and cerebral clash of ideas generated by some of the beauty industry’s most accomplished creators as well as up-and-coming talent, writers and commentators with a wider cultural view - featuring opinion pieces by Kate Spicer and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown an exclusive interview with Pam Hogg. Beauty Papers commissioned striking imagery from photographers such as Ben Hassett, Benjamin Lennox, Ronald Stoops and Inge Grognard, Paola Kudacki, Dario Catellani, Pawel Pysz, Mari Sarai and Bruno Staub. The line up of collaborators also includes Rosemary Ferguson, Bella Freud, Guinevere van Seenus, Apartamento magazine creator and photographer Nacho Alegre and a personal contribution from Serge Lutens. Beauty Papers is on sale from 2 July, £9, available at bookshops and newsagents in the UK and abroad. Initial print run 15,000 Perfect bound 160 pages + 6 covers.
